Leonardo da Vinci and Physical Fitness

Leonardo da Vinci is well known for being one of the greatest intellectual geniuses of all time.  However many people do not know just how well balanced his body, mind, and spirit were.  Not only was mental fitness extremely important to da Vinci, but physical fitness was equally as important.   Ambidexterity, poise, endurance, strength, and correct posture were all extremely important to him.  Furthermore, if you think about it for a few minutes this fact makes sense when you consider all that he accomplished.   One of da Vinci’s favorite subjects to study was human anatomy, so it only makes sense that he would apply all he learned to his own life.

Physical health, exercise, and diet were all extremely important to who Leonardo was and the lifestyle he lived.  He realized early on that optimal mental performance and enjoyment from life can only be obtained when your body is equally as healthy.  This is exactly what Leonardo da Vinci’s principle of Corporalita represents.  This principle is related to all areas of your physical wellbeing and how you can further improve and train this aspect of your body and life.

How does corporalita effect me?

There are countless ways you can incorporate corporalita into your life.  In this video, I provide a few possibilities, but always be on the lookout for new ideas you may practice.  Just remember that for all exercises the most important aspect is using correct form, posture, and being constantly aware of what you’re doing with your body.  This helps you to be mindful of all the sensations you feel. where you can improve, and it helps to quicken the healing and improvement process.

One aspect of corporalita that I didn’t mention in the video is ambidexterity.  Leonardo da Vinci had the ability to write and draw with both of his hands, and he could also write backward in his notebooks.  This skill helps to better train and connect both sides of your brain.  Ambidexterity can also make your mind and body overall healthier and more effective.  Training this skill is easy, all you need to do is use your non-dominant hand for regular tasks that you otherwise wouldn’t use it for.  For instance, I can practice using my left hand to write, draw, throw, and catch.

If there’s one thing you take away from this video and post, I hope that it’s the following: remember that a healthy body and spirit allows you to have a healthier and more effective mind.  Especially for people like us interested in accelerated memory, learning, and intelligence, physical fitness and wellbeing is extremely important.  You need to make sure enough oxygen is efficiently flowing into your brain and that you have the energy needed to complete your daily tasks and routine.
